Best Public Schools in Washington State in 2026: What Buyers Need to Know Before They Choose a Neighborhood

School district is one of the most common factors buyers cite when choosing where to live in the Seattle metro — and one of the most misunderstood. Parents research rankings obsessively, then discover the ranking doesn't always match the experience. Districts with strong averages have individual schools that vary significantly. And the "best" district depends on what your specific student needs.

This guide covers the data honestly, explains what the rankings actually measure, and gives you the context to make a real decision rather than just chasing the highest score.

How Washington State school rankings work — and what they miss

Most school rankings in Washington State pull from three primary data sources: the Washington School Report Card (maintained by OSPI, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction), Niche.com's school ratings, and US News & World Report's high school rankings.

These rankings primarily measure:

  • Standardized test scores (Smarter Balanced Assessment in WA)
  • Graduation rates
  • AP/IB course participation and pass rates
  • College readiness metrics
  • Student-to-teacher ratios

What they measure less well: the quality of specific programs (arts, vocational, special education), the strength of extracurricular offerings, school culture and belonging, and how well a district serves students who aren't on a four-year college track.

A district with a high average score may have significant school-to-school variation within it. Always research the specific school your address feeds into, not just the district overall.

The top-performing districts in Washington State

Bellevue School District (BSD)

Consistently ranked #1 or #2 among Washington State's school districts, the Bellevue School District sets the benchmark against which most other Eastside districts are compared.

Key facts:

  • Serves Bellevue and portions of Redmond, Newcastle, and Sammamish
  • Four comprehensive high schools: Bellevue, Newport, Interlake, and Sammamish
  • Newport and Interlake consistently rank among the top high schools in Washington State and nationally
  • Strong IB (International Baccalaureate) programs, particularly at Interlake
  • Among the highest AP pass rates in Washington State
  • Graduation rates consistently above 95%

The honest context: BSD's reputation is earned. It is genuinely exceptional by any measurable standard. The tradeoff is that BSD homes command a significant price premium — buyers pay meaningfully more per square foot to be in-district than in comparable neighboring districts.

Important nuance: BSD does not serve all of Bellevue. Some eastern and southern Bellevue addresses fall within the Issaquah or Lake Washington school districts. Always verify your specific address.

Issaquah School District (ISD)

ISD is BSD's closest peer in Washington State and is significantly underappreciated by buyers who assume BSD is the only option for top-tier schooling.

Key facts:

  • Serves Issaquah, Sammamish, and portions of Newcastle and Renton
  • Three comprehensive high schools: Issaquah, Liberty, and Skyline
  • Skyline High School consistently ranks among the top high schools in Washington State
  • Liberty High School has strong STEM and arts programming
  • AP participation and pass rates rival BSD
  • Graduation rates above 95%

The honest context: ISD is as close to BSD as any district in the state, and homes in ISD cost meaningfully less than comparable homes in BSD. For buyers who have been told BSD is the only acceptable option, ISD is worth a serious second look. The price differential between a Bellevue/BSD home and a comparable Issaquah/ISD home is often $200K–$400K at similar square footage.

Lake Washington School District (LWSD)

LWSD is one of the largest and most respected districts in Washington State, serving Kirkland, Redmond, Kenmore, and portions of Bothell and Sammamish.

Key facts:

  • Serves approximately 30,000 students across a large geographic area
  • Six comprehensive high schools including Lake Washington, Redmond, Eastlake, Juanita, Inglemoor, and others
  • Consistently strong academic performance across the district
  • Strong technology and STEM integration, reflecting the tech-sector community it serves
  • Graduation rates above 94%

The honest context: LWSD's size means more school-to-school variation than smaller BSD or ISD. Some LWSD high schools are stronger than others. Research the specific school feed for your address rather than assuming LWSD uniformity. Overall, LWSD is an excellent district — most buyers find it more than sufficient, and it serves some of the most desirable communities on the Eastside.

Northshore School District

Northshore serves most of Bothell and portions of Kenmore, Woodinville, and Kirkland, and is consistently among the stronger districts in Snohomish County.

Key facts:

  • Serves approximately 22,000 students
  • Bothell High School and Inglemoor High School are the primary comprehensive high schools
  • Strong AP and Running Start (dual enrollment) programs
  • Graduation rates above 92%
  • Steadily improving academic performance over the past decade

The honest context: Northshore is often underestimated by buyers who use BSD and LWSD as their only reference points. It is a genuinely good district — not at the very top of the state, but solidly strong. For buyers who don't specifically require BSD or LWSD, Northshore offers quality schooling at Bothell's more accessible price point.

Mercer Island School District

Mercer Island's small, cohesive school district serves one of the most academically engaged communities in the region.

Key facts:

  • Single comprehensive high school (Mercer Island High School)
  • Consistently ranks among the top high schools in Washington State
  • Very high AP participation and pass rates
  • Tight-knit community with strong parental engagement
  • Graduation rates above 97%

The honest context: Mercer Island School District is exceptional, and the community's investment in education is genuine. The tradeoff is price — Mercer Island homes are among the most expensive in King County, and the school district is part of why.

Districts worth knowing outside the Eastside

Shoreline School District (North Seattle): Consistently strong, particularly at Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools. Serves an engaged academic community and offers IB programming.

Edmonds School District: A large district serving Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, and surrounding communities. Larger and more variable than Northshore, with some strong individual schools.

Federal Way School District: Actively improving, with investment in AP and career/technical education. Below Eastside averages but better than its historical reputation.

Kent School District: One of the largest in King County. Academic performance varies significantly by school. Strong vocational and career/technical education programs.

The school boundary verification you must do before buying

This cannot be overstated: school district boundaries do not follow city boundaries, neighborhood names, or ZIP codes in any consistent way.

A home in Bellevue might be in BSD, LWSD, or ISD depending on its exact address. A home in Kirkland might feed into LWSD or Northshore. A home in Renton might be in the Renton School District or BSD.

Before making any purchase decision based on school access, do three things:

  1. Look up the specific address on the district's school locator tool (each district's website has one)
  2. Verify which specific elementary, middle, and high school that address feeds into — not just the district
  3. Confirm that open enrollment or boundary exceptions won't affect your specific situation

We've seen buyers lose significant money — paying a BSD premium for a home that doesn't actually feed into BSD schools — because they assumed district from neighborhood rather than verified by address.

Our guidance for buyers making school-based decisions

The Eastside concentration of strong school districts is real and is one of the primary reasons buyers pay the premiums they do. BSD and ISD are genuinely exceptional by any national standard. LWSD and Northshore are excellent. The differences between them are meaningful but often narrower than the price premium between their respective markets would suggest.

The practical advice we give buyers: define what matters most about school quality for your specific student — academic rigor, arts programs, school size, specific programs — and research at the school level, not just the district level. The right answer is different for every household.
